The Del Mar Garden Club is excited to announce that we will be having another tree walk for the community in October.Meet at the Civic Center at 10AM on Tuesday, October 7, and you will be guided by our very talented Dr. Michael Simpson as he discusses some of the trees and shrubs in Del Mar, along Camino Del Mar and adjacent streets.Plan to learn about some plants from around the world, like the Dragon Tree, African Tulip Tree, Pōhutukawa, and several palms, plus some California natives like the Monterey Cypress and the rarest pine tree in the world, our very own Torrey Pine. There is no need to register; just show up at 10AM.
The Dragon Tree, Dracaena draco, is planted in Del Mar. Native to the Canary Islands, the tree exudes a reddish resin, in the past purported to be the blood of dragons. The resin has been used as a medicine, dye, and varnish, used in fact to stain and finish Stradivarius violins. Photo: Michael Simpson
