2025 Fall Benefit: DMCC’s Silver Anniversary

On October 4, DMCC will celebrate 25 years of supporting and serving seniors as they age independently at home with a Silver Anniversary Benefit! To learn about the event and purchase tickets, visit www.dmcc.cc/Fall Benefit.

Fight the Flu – It Starts With You!

Did you know that approximately 80% of flu deaths occur in older adults? The single most important measure you can take to protect yourself and loved ones from influenza is to get your flu vaccine shot every Fall.

DMCC will host a flu vaccine clinic on Friday, September 19, 12:30pm – 3:30pm, on the patio of the Del Mar Community Building, 225 9th St. A CVS pharmacist will be there to dispense shots specialized for the 65+ population, and shots are free with Medicare and most private insurance plans. If updated Covid boosters have hit the market, those will be available too! Have a snack on us while you enjoy a beautiful view of the ocean, say hello to friends and neighbors, and do your part to protect yourself and the community from infectious disease.

Welcome, new board members!

In July, DMCC was joined by three new board members with a diversity of experience. Carol German is a retired Student Affairs Administrator, and has chaired a wide array of programs, committees, and organizations; she is now chairing the DMCC Program Committee. Dan Maneval is a biopharmaceutical consultant and is a member of multiple academic Biomedical Engineering advisory boards; he currently serves on the DMCC Transportation Committee and as a DMCC Essential Transportation volunteer. Chana Mannen is a retired Deputy Manager of the San Diego County Fair and former Executive Director of the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation; she now chairs the DMCC Special Events Committee.

President Katie Militello commented, “We are pleased to welcome Carol, Dan and Chana to our board as we know they share our passion for helping older adults remain independent and in their own homes for as long as possible.”

Volunteer of the Month – July and August

DMCC’s Volunteer of the Month for July 2025 was Lois Higgins, nominated by DMCC board member Judy Schuckit. Lois is a member of DMCC’s Essential Transportation team and serves as the volunteer leader of DMCC Trailblazers, the trailwalking activity organized in partnership with the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy that meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at 9am.

Faye Detsky-Weil was named Volunteer of the Month in August 2025 after also being nominated by Judy Schuckit; Faye is a deeply experienced and empathetic Medicare counselor who meets one on one with older adults who need the advocacy through the HICAP program DMCC hosts in partnership with the nonprofit law firm Elder Law and Advocacy.

DMCC programs and services depend on our incredible volunteers! To learn more about Lois or Faye, becoming a volunteer program leader, or any other volunteer role, visit dmcc.cc/volunteerofthemonth.
