Quotable Del Mar: JD Castile

“Since I was a child, when I was first learning about sailing and astronomy, [the Polynesian] people and voyages seemed larger than life and inspired me to find my career path sailing around the world. I hope the Moananuiākea voyage will inspire more people, from different cultures, to come together for the health of the oceans, planet and each other.”

Del Mar native JD Castile (1986-2025) was a crew member in 2023 for Moananuiākea, the 15th major voyage of Hōkūleʻa, the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s traditional canoe, which made its first voyage in 1975. JD was fearless as a child, spending any free time in the ocean. As an adult, he spent 10+ years living in Hawaii, then traveled the world to work, going on surf, snowboard and paragliding trips in between jobs. What he loved about the sea:  “The peace, the intensity, the stars, the storms, the waves…”
