Del Mar Community Connections

Fight Fraud!

Did you know that the AARP and the Federal Trade Commission total the amount stolen from older adults in the US through fraud schemes in just the last year at $61.5 billion? And a recent AARP report found that while 42% of American adults have had a personal experience with fraud, 78% of those surveyed did not report the crime to law enforcement, and 89% did not report it to FTC.

DMCC will host expert fraud fighters from AARP California, in collaboration with the San Diego County Aging and Independence Services (AIS) on Sunday, July 13 at 2pm as part of AARP’s summer San Diego Scam Jam tour. During the free in-person discussion, held at Del Mar Town Hall, 1050 Camino Del Mar, experts will share how to recognize, avoid, and report scams before they happen to you or your loved ones. Attendees will learn about the top scams in San Diego, practice identifying red flags, how to protect themselves from identity theft, and receive free resources and tools. AARP membership is not required to participate, but advance registration is required. Those interested in attending should register at aarp.org/SanDiegoScamJam.

Volunteer of the Month – June

DMCC’s Volunteer of the Month for June 2025 was Nancy Kane, nominated by DMCC board member Tanya Young. Nancy is a Del Mar Garden Club member who took charge of Project JOY over the holiday season, a partnership between DMGC and DMCC in which Garden Club members handcraft beautiful gifts to deliver to DMCC’s older adult participants who are homebound, recovering from illness or injury, or have recently lost a loved one. Nancy said of the experience “After delivering some of the gifts a few years back, I couldn’t wait to put my spin on it. The partnership not only brings so much joy to recipients, but also to so many other Garden Club volunteers that helped put it all together.”
