As we celebrate the 4th of July and consider all the challenges facing us in Del Mar, in California, and in the United States, let’s reflect on what true patriotism means.
Patriotism can be thought of as a peoples’ shared set of values, respectful interaction, and widespread confidence in our country’s capability to do big things that make our lives better and contribute much to others. There are times when flags and pledges are weak expressions of patriotism when there is widespread hatefulness and strident discord in the land.
This is one of those times. And because the national scene looks so dysfunctional , it is tempting to get cynical and disengage. Or we could try to rekindle our patriotism from the bottom up, starting with neighborhoods and communities where we can have more direct impact.
Our community offers many such opportunities to engage in patriotic activity that is already underway and more that can be started.
It is patriotic to be well-informed, engaged citizens of our city and our country.
It is patriotic to live our lives in ways that sustain the life of our planet. We can manage scarce water supplies. We can use efficient energy appliances and vehicles. We can use more native varieties of plants.
It is patriotic to preserve open spaces for nature and human activity.
It is patriotic to do our share in solving the widespread housing shortage by providing affordable housing rentals for middle income families.
It is patriotic to hold our elected leaders accountable for high standards of honest and ethical behavior.
It is patriotic to volunteer for the many committees that contribute so much to the quality of our lives
It is patriotic to drive safely on our pedestrian-oriented streets.
It is patriotic to keep our beaches clean and accessible for thousands of visitors.
Del Mar Community Connections brings together many of our older residents to support and enrich their lives. More volunteers are always needed.
The Del Mar Foundation sponsors many group events that bring us together for mutual education and enjoyment. They always need volunteers.
It is patriotic to interact with neighbors in thoughtful and respectful ways, even when our politics differ.
This is the stuff of patriotism, not just flag waving but active citizenship building community.
