Spring Pink

If you want a show-stopper tree for your garden, consider a Purple-leaved Eastern Red Bud (Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’) that is just starting to burst into bloom along Camino Del Mar between 11th and 12th St. It is a small (to about 20 feet), deciduous tree native to Eastern North America. In the spring its bare branches are covered with clusters of small pink to purplish pea shaped flowers that are produced before or just as the heart shaped leaves emerge. This cultivar remains colorful after blooming as its new leaves are purple that change to a bronze-green and finally to yellow in the fall.  The Del Mar Garden Club will be providing tours of Del Mar’s wonderful trees starting soon so look for further information.
