Del Mar Foundation: DMF Talks

Surfing History

On October 10th, DMF hosted a DMF Talk featuring Jim Kempton (Executive Director) and Jane Schmauss (Co-Founder and Historian) of the California Surf Museum. Kempton and Schmauss spoke about the early history of surfing as well as current trends and technology. The presentation was very much enjoyed by all, particularly the insight shared by the speakers into the significant role Del Mar has played in surfing culture.

Searching for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

The next DMF Talk: Who’s Out There? Searching for Extraterrestrial Intelligence using “techosignatures” is scheduled for November 14th, 6pm-8pm at Town Hall.

Shelley Wright, a Professor in Astronomy & Astrophysics at UCSD, will present an overview of current and future technosignature methods and programs that are looking for life in the universe.

For over 50 years, astronomers have been conducting the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) primarily focused on radio wavelengths. In this last decade astronomers are working on new ways to search for extraterrestrial communication and the presence of “technosignatures.”
