Quotable Del Mar: Dwight Worden

“I’m going to be right here. I’m going to go to council meetings in shorts and T-shirts and sit in the back row and have a say like any other citizen.”

—Dwight Worden

from “Big Send off for Dwight” by Nancy Ewing, Del Mar Surfcomber (1983)

On September 23, 2024, at Dwight Worden’s final meeting before his resignation took effect, the City Council closed its regular meeting with an “Appreciation for Outgoing Councilmember Dwight Worden,” including a resolution, proclamations from area elected officials, and comments from members of the public who filled Town Hall to thank Worden for his 50-plus years of public service and environmental leadership.

In 1983, when Dwight resigned as City Attorney, Nancy Ewing (author of Del Mar Looking Back) asked Dwight, “What’s next?” His reply, quoted above, seems equally apt today. Or at least we can hope that Dwight finds ways to have his say, and to continue making his signature contributions to Del Mar and our region.
