In last month’s column I wrote that my term as DMF president ends this month. Set to take over is Tom Neuman, who was appointed to the Grants Committee in May 2022, became chair of the committee in July 2022, and joined the DMF board in October 2022.
Tom lived in Del Mar as a UCSD student; and he and his wife, Eileen Kelley, were part-time residents of Del Mar from 2010 until they retired. Since retiring, they have been living in Del Mar full-time.
Tom has significant experience in management and administration, related to his work as an ENT surgeon, and his experience as a Navy doctor. He was founder and Board Chair of an Accountable Care Organization in Ohio. This experience proved invaluable in July 2022 when the then-chair of the Grants Committee unexpectedly resigned due to health reasons. Tom stepped right in, quickly got up to speed, and kept DMF’s grant-making on track.
In fact, he did much more than just keep it on track. As DMF’s endowment has grown over time, so has our grant-making capacity. During his time chairing the committee, Tom sought out grant opportunities to take advantage of this higher capacity, were in keeping with the DMF mission, and broadened our reach by bringing in grantees, projects, and activities new to DMF.
I imagine Tom will do for DMF what he did for grants, and I am really looking forward to it. With support from all of us – DMF’s board, committees, and volunteers, as well as the community – Tom’s time as president will be fantastic, and will allow DMF to continue to doing many wonderful things for Del Mar.
