Del Mar Community Connections

Volunteer of the Year 2024

DMCC’s Volunteer of the Year for 2024 was announced as the Sandpiper’s own Jeff Barnouw! Nominated by Tuesday Lunch Connections team captain Phyllis Mirsky, Jeff has served DMCC since 2010 in a variety of capacities, including board service (from which he is now retired), and has volunteered for countless other local nonprofit organizations. He was selected for this honor because he regularly and systematically calls more than 20 households of the most mature seniors to invite them to lunch and generally check on their well-being. DMCC programs and services depend on our incredible volunteers! To learn more about our TLC Team of volunteers or becoming a DMCC volunteer yourself, visit dmcc.cc/volunteerofthemonth.

Summer Lecture Series Will Focus on Empowered Endings

People of all ages experience curiosity and anxiety about how their End of Life journey will unfold. Many people have witnessed friends and family members go through difficult and traumatizing experiences, and would very much like to have a different experience–for themselves and for those they care about. Responding to requests about the subject matter from the community we serve, this summer DMCC will host three in-person discussions, each held on a Friday at 11am at Del Mar Town Hall, focusing on helping seniors to better understand the landscape of available healthcare and legal options for the end of one’s life.

On June 21, speaker Dr. Bob Uslander will kick off a three-lecture series to talk about Creating an Empowered End of Life Experience. He will share how we can transform the way our society approaches the final chapters of life—from healthcare systems to politics to personal beliefs–and ensure that patients and their loved ones always have access to an Empowered End of Life Experience in which their decisions and dignity are honored. Those interested in attending the June lecture should register for the program at www.dmcc.cc/programregistration.

On July 26, Dr. Uslander’s topic will be Planning Your End of Life Journey: Conversations Not Crises. On August 16, he will address Family Support: A Missing Piece of the Healthcare Puzzle. Registration for the July and August lectures will be available immediately after the preceding lecture.
