The multi-year process for evaluating and analyzing the relocation of rail tracks from the bluff to a tunnel is in very early stages. Many voices, including some elected leaders, are raising concerns well before there is actual information about location and impact data. There will be numerous opportunities for public input especially as real information becomes available. The process will be managed by SANDAG over a period of five years before actual construction begins in year 2028, with a 2035 target date for completion. During 2023 and 2024 there will be environmental surveys, analysis of possible track routes, and public outreach. Preliminary engineering and a draft environmental document will be available for public comment in 2025, with 2026 as the target for the final environmental document and final design.
Although Del Mar will be impacted, it is important to understand that this is a regional project so our influence on key decisions will depend on the credibility of our elected Council Members.
