What’s New for the Green Cart? An Organics Cheat Sheet

Your new green cart, with its contents headed for EDCO’s Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Facility, is an easy way to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions – especially by diverting methane, which is 25x more potent than CO2 in trapping heat in the atmosphere, from the landfill.

The AD captures, filters and upgrades the methane into 100% renewable natural gas (RNG), so your food scraps will be powering EDCO’s vehicles. A tidy closed loop, indeed!

Best of all: lots of things that are hard to compost at home are suitable for the AD: Cooked or raw meat, poultry and seafood (including bones), cheese, dairy products, baked goods, nuts, jelly, candy, and snack foods, along with fruits, vegetables, grains, pasta, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, tea leaves, leftovers, and spoiled food.

Food-Soiled Paper: “Clean” paper goes in the blue recycle cart, but previously, food-soiled paper had to go to the landfill. No more! Now welcome in your green cart: food-soiled paper, including paper bags, napkins, towels, plates, cups, take-out containers and take-out boxes (with no plastic or wax coating, and with metal removed), coffee filters, and tissues.
