Remembering Vava

On August 31, Del Mar lost a consummate volunteer and woman about town, Barbara (Vava) Zoia Anderson.

Vava loved living in Del Mar, which reminded her of the small-town life she knew growing up in California’s Central Valley, an area renowned for farming. Because of this background, she took delight in becoming a founding member of the Del Mar Farmer’s Market; there probably wasn’t a fruit or vegetable she didn’t know something about or when to eat it (seasonally).

An avid reader and passionate supporter of the Del Mar Library, she ran the book sale for many years and donated classic books on California history. As a former high school English teacher and counselor, she used her acquired skills to help people throughout the rest of her life.  She not only patronized local businesses but knew the people who worked there.  She never forgot a name, including those of the homeless people who knew her by name, too, because she talked with them and knew their stories.

Vava lived a quiet life and accomplished much for her town. She will be missed.
