A new Entry Monument on Jimmy Durante Blvd., and across from the Del Mar Fire Station, directs walkers to the Lagoon Boardwalk then east on the first leg of the San Dieguito River Park’s 55-mile long Coast to Crest Trail from Del Mar to Volcan Mountain near Julian. The entry also provides a close-up look at that portion of the Fairgrounds South Overflow Lot that has just been roped off for restoration to a tidal marsh (see related article on page 6). The small marker at the base of the monument is the first of the half-mile and mile markers created by the Friends of the San Dieguito River Valley. In more remote sections of the trail, hikers in distress will be able to seek help by identifying the nearest mile marker.
