Gloria (Brooks) Parry, a community activist for 60 years, died Sept. 21 at the age of 90.  Brooks and her husband, Bill, a reporter and editor for The San Diego Union, built their home on Ocean View Ave. in 1953, reared three daughters and contributed consistently to the development of the area. Bill died in 1992.

Local leaders still try to emulate Brooks’ accomplishments. In 1974, Brooks and Jinx Ecke of Encinitas chaired the bond campaign that funded Torrey Pines High School. The San Dieguito district is trying Nov. 6 to repeat their success.

From 1986 to 1995, Brooks was the last Del Mar resident to serve on the county fairgrounds board. Outspoken and independent, she described herself as a director from Del Mar rather than the City’s representative. Her primary interests were agriculture and youth activities.

Her efforts also helped create Seagrove and Powerhouse Parks and Del Mar’s annexation to the Metropolitan Sewer System.
