A few weeks ago I discovered a promising new community resource right in our own back yard. Villa Musica is a non-profit music center, whose mission is to enable people of all ages and backgrounds to discover, explore and develop musical skills and share their love of music.
I attended a performance of poetry and song presented by Del Mar’s Mai Lon Gittelsohn, who many of you know as an instructor of the San Dieguito Adult School’s Writing Your Life story class. Mai Lon’s performance introduced Villa Musica’s new Creative Aging Program, an outreach program for seniors with activities that includes Sally’s Symphonies, a Sing Along, and a Zumba class.
Villa Musica is located on Roselle Street in Sorrento Valley. The new facility has 4,415 square feet, with six music studios and a small recital hall seating 50-55 people. There is also a kitchen large enough for meetings and receptions and a lobby where you can read, use the wi-fi or just relax. Villa Musica promises to create a focal point for community music education and to inspire San Diegans to embrace music-making as part of their lives.
