Below are Del Mar veterans who were AWOL to the October Sandpiper request for veteran names, but they were certainly not AWOL when it was time to serve our country. We salute them!
Jim Eckmann, JAGC, LT (though selected to LCDR on the very day I was released from active duty, so when I call USAA they address me as “Commander.” U.S. Navy, 1966-1970. Naval Unit Commendation, Nat’l Defense Service Medal.
Howard Gad, Construction battalion of the U.S. Navy (CBs) during Vietnam. 8 years (4 active & 4 reserves).
Judd Halenza, Ensign to Lt. Commander, U.S.Navy, 1965 to 1973, reserves to 1977. I was on active duty for 7 years and flew over 300 combat missions as a carrier based Navy pilot.
Dick Herzberg, Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Coast Guard, 1968-72, Line Officer and Command Duty.
Roger W. Hillbrook, Captain, U.S.Air Force. Served 1966-1970. Stationed in Southeast Asia July 1968-July 1969.
Carl Hilliard, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, 1957-60, electronics counter measures.
Don Instone, Lance Corporal, U.S.Marine Corps, Infantry, Vietnam 1967-1968.
Ken Olson, Sergeant, U.S.Marine Corps, majoring in infantry and minoring in electronics.
Joe Sullivan, Commissioned as Ensign from officer candidate school, promoted to Lt(jg) for good behavior, U.S. Navy, 1967-70. Since I had a degree in liberal arts the Navy made me an engineering officer. Served 2.5 deployments on replenishment ammunition ship off coast of Vietnam.
We also salute any other vets we may not have found.
