After years of planning, fundraising, and hard work, construction of the 17th Street Beach Safety Center is getting closer.

Jeff Katz Architecture was chosen from a pool of eleven qualified respondents selected by a committee of city staff and Del Mar community member Howard Gad.
The firm was chosen because of their extensive portfolio of public safety facilities, technical competency, and a history of few change orders.

Completion of the Design Development phase and Construction Document phase is scheduled for late summer after which a bid for construction will go out.
The preliminary design has an estimated 2.8 million dollar budget. A $160,000 contribution from a hard working local non-profit group, Friends of the Powerhouse, enabled the City Manager to execute the agreement with Jeff Katz Architecture.

In addition to the Friends group and local resident contributors, the city has set aside proceeds from the sale of the ‘Balboa Lot’ in late 2010. Also, the city is requesting a $650,000 grant from the Coastal Conservancy in May.

The project is a major upgrade over the existing outdated Community Services building and restrooms. While the Beach Safety Center will provide a major aesthetic upgrade and commitment to sustainable building in the area, the project meets the growing functional and safety needs of our Community Services Department.

Additional square footage will create a more professional environment for employees and business operations, while an added beach access path from Coast Boulevard to the beach and enhanced bathroom facilities will provide safe and welcoming upgrades to visitors.

The community as a whole has made a strong commitment and contribution to this necessary public facility facelift. From all angles, the dedication of our residents and city staff to make this project a reality is inspiring.
