A train stop petition representing almost 400 households in a number of coastal communities has been sent to the Governor, The Fair Board, and several city councils. The petition expresses strong support for a permanent train stop at the Del Mar fairgrounds and strong opposition to a temporary stop.
According to organizers, Helen and Richard Eckfield, the petition includes 26 households on 21-24th streets in Del Mar who assert they would be negatively impacted by the Fair Board’s plan to install a temporary stop in their neighborhoods south of the river behind the businesses on Jimmy Durante blvd.
The permanent stop has been in their plan for decades and calls for placement at the rear of the fairgrounds between the existing double tracks in Solana Beach and the north side of the San Dieguito River.
The Eckfields state that the petition is also supported by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) stating, “Our research shows that persons taking public transportation to a venue where they intend to drink are successful in returning using that same transportation mode...the location at the western edge of the fairgrounds should be perfect in that regard.”
