San Diego County's budget woes have reached Del Mar's library. With this year's county library budget off 9.4%, all 33 branches are affected. In Del Mar, this has meant loss of funds for acquisitions, activities and staffing.

That's where Friends of the Del Mar Library comes in. A $1,000 contribution voted last week enables adult and children's programs to be maintained at their present levels. Other donations prevent a reduction in magazine subscriptions.

At the same time, the Friends are continuing to finance capital improvements. The organization gave $50,000 last year to supplement a $200,000 appropriation by the county for a new community room, which already is attracting a variety of users.
Now, the Friends are joining with the city and Garden Club to improve the exterior. The board appropriated $500 to buy new plants. Another $3,000 is earmarked by the City of Del Mar for masonry, irrigation and electrical improvements.

The landscaping will combine drought resistant native plants such as ceanothus and lemonade berry with succulents and grasses. Some new plants will be purchased and others will be donated.

Existing bougainvillea, bay laurel and a sun camellia will be retained. At the southwest corner of the library site, in front of the new community room, a rock garden will be installed. The Garden Club, augmented by city landscapers who are responsible for maintenance, will donate the design and many plants.

This partnership is typical of the library's tradition of strong community support. The county Board of Supervisors, led by Pam Slater- Price, a Del Mar resident, has been exceedingly generous. So has the City Council, which recently paid most of the cost of a new roof, and currently is helping finance landscaping improvements. Now, Pat Freeman, Friends president, is asking individuals to step forward and help.
“You're invited to visit our new web site at www.friendsofdelmarlibrary.org read about our activities and learn how to join the Friends or make a donation,” she said.
